ADDING SOUL TO MODERN HOMES
HOW TO INFUSE CONTEMPORARY SPACES WITH A SENSE OF WARMTH AND CHARM
Here’s a confession for you… I’m totally obsessed with scrolling through real estate listings!
Even when I’m not actively searching for something, it just keeps me hooked.
Honestly, I’ve done this for years—so much that I know the trends, prices, and demand in nearly every neighborhood in Stockholm, where I live.
But why am I telling you this? Because after years of scrolling (or “research,” as I call it 😉), I’ve noticed something interesting.
No matter how many beautiful new builds hit the market each year, there’s one type of home that’s always the most sought after:
Historic homes.
In Stockholm and other big cities in Scandinavia, this often means homes built in the early 1900s—what we call ‘Turn-of-the-century houses’.
And they’re loved for their quality craftsmanship, tall ceilings, and thoughtful layouts.
Yet, isn’t that a bit surprising? You’d think what’s currently ‘in style’—new builds with clean, contemporary designs—would be what everyone wants, right?
I’m guessing you might have noticed something similar where you live…
…maybe it’s a historic district with unique architecture or a street lined with charming, older homes that has remained popular year after year. So, why does it happen?
I believe it all comes down to one thing:
Soul ✨
That intangible warmth and character we all crave in a home. And in historic homes, the soul of the space was always built in through unique and custom details.
However, that’s not to say modern homes can’t have it—they absolutely can!
But with their more scaled-back designs and clean lines, that sense of soul just isn’t a given.
Especially with today’s push for efficiency—cheap materials and cookie-cutter designs that often leave newer homes looking like copies of one another.
And this is unfortunately what leads to many modern homes feeling cold and impersonal.
But let’s circle back to modern design done right!
Now that feels inviting, warm, and full of personality. Full of soul.
But whether you're working on a new build or reimagining an existing space, it does take intention. And we can never take it for granted like we can in those historic homes!
So, let’s have a look at four impactful ways to make it happen:
4 ways to INSTANTLY bring MORE soul to A modern home
01. Mixing Materials
When done thoughtfully, mixing materials is one of the most impactful ways to create warmth in any room!
For example, combining sleek finishes with organic textures—like polished concrete paired with reclaimed wood or soft textiles alongside brushed metal—instantly adds tons of richness and contrast.
02. Wall And Ceiling Treatments
Sprucing up the walls is such a great way to bring character and personality into a home. For example, adding paneling, plaster finishes, or a beautiful wallpaper.
And don’t forget the ceilings! They’re a hidden opportunity to elevate your entire home.
Think beams, paneling, or even a contrasting paint color. These elements not only complete a room but also add a sense of height and balance.
03. Unexpected Details
Adding unexpected details, like a uniquely shaped mirror or rustic, textured vases, can make a home feel truly personal, warm, and lived-in.
And whether it’s a quirky family heirloom or a one-of-a-kind piece that tells your story, it’s also the perfect way to let your personality shine through.
04. Sculptural Lighting
You’ve probably seen that many modern spaces rely only on recessed spotlights throughout.
However, they don’t add much personality and, unfortunately, don’t provide balanced lighting either. But by choosing the right fixtures, you can transform both the mood of a room and add artistry.
I like to focus on function first and then opt for sculptural shapes, like a striking chandelier or pendant, asymmetrical sconces, or beautifully designed table lamps.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, it seems it’s time for me to go do some more scrolling… I mean, research 😉
