5 OUTDOOR DESIGN TRENDS I’M LOVING RIGHT NOW
FRESH DESIGN IDEAS AND INSPIRATION FOR OUTDOOR LIVING
It’s finally that time of year again!
The air feels softer, the days stretch longer, and the boundaries between indoors and out slowly begin to blur. Exterior walls no longer contain the whole story, and home is starting to spill outward—onto terraces, balconies, and gardens.
And the most exciting part? There’s a shift in how we think about these spaces.
This season, outdoor design is feeling fresh, intentional—and yes, even soulful. More and more, we’re treating our outdoor areas with the same care and creativity we bring to the rooms inside.
So whether you have a tiny balcony, a tucked-away terrace, or a full backyard to work with, here are five outdoor design trends shaping the season. I hope they help you see your space with fresh eyes—and inspire you to step outside with a new perspective.
Let’s head outside:
5 CURRENT OUTDOOR DESIGN TRENDS I’M LOVING
01. Mediterranean Influences
The Mediterranean has long been one of my favorite places—so I’ll admit, I’m a little biased here. But really, isn’t there something kind of magical about that slow-living, almost romantic energy?
And lately, that look and feel is finding its way into more and more outdoor spaces.
Think warm tones, limewashed textures, terracotta tiles and pots, a mix of stone and solid, weathered wood. It’s simple, classic, and full of quiet charm.
02. Lighting Design
Outdoor lighting has long been treated as purely practical—just enough to see where you’re going. But lately, there’s a shift toward creating mood, not just visibility.
Like indoors, it’s all about adding in soft, warm light. Think pendant lamps over the table, portable floor or table lamps, candles, string lights in the trees, and even subtle uplighting in the garden.
And when these light sources are combined just right? Your whole outdoor space becomes its own vibe once the sun sets.
03. From Formal to Relaxed
Once upon a time, outdoor areas were supposed to feel polished, formal, and more for guests than everyday living. Now? It’s less about perfection and more about relaxed, everyday comfort.
We’re seeing low-slung seating, poufs, textiles you don’t mind tossing in the wash, and even some whimsical elements. It’s about design that supports everything from spontaneous lunches to lazy afternoon naps and cozy evening hangs with loved ones.
04. Bringing the Indoors OUT
In recent years, interior design has been all about bringing the outdoors in. But now, we’re also flipping the script!
Outdoor spaces are being treated with the same care as our interiors—thoughtful layouts, layered textures, and all the little details that make a space feel considered. One of my favorite parts of this trend is the soft furnishings, like beautiful patterned rugs, throw pillows, blankets and tablecloths.
It’s the magic of home, just with a bit more fresh air!
05. Outdoor Kitchens and Fireplaces
What would an outdoor space be without the smell of something delicious on the grill or a crackling fire? There’s just something about it.
Whether it’s a fireplace, built-in pizza oven, a fire pit with casual seating around it, or even a full kitchen setup—they’re becoming the new hearts of the backyard.
And not only is it about cooking and warmth, it’s also about connection. And isn’t that what the best spaces are really all about?
